// Bassekou Kouyaté

Born in 1966 into one of Mali’s most notable music families, Bassekou Kouyaté seemed destined to bring its griot traditions and the ancient ngoni lute into the 21st century. He grew up in a remote village on the banks of the Niger river, near Segu, the former capital of the Bamana (Bambara) Empire. Kouyaté settled in Bamako at 19, where he began a long and rich collaboration with Toumani Diabaté and later, Ali Farka Touré. Early on, he attracted attention to the ngoni, not only by being a spectacular player but also by attaching a strap to his ngoni so that he could play standing up, a trend-setting innovation. He recorded two albums as part of the Toumani’s Symmetric Trio (with and balafon player Keletigui Diabaté), featured on the award winning Kulanjan (the collaborative album by Diabaté and Taj Mahal) and was at the heart of Touré’s posthumous masterpiece Savane. In 2007, Kouyaté and his Ngoni ba group released their first international album Segu Blue. It was awarded the BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music Album of the Year and Kouyaté and his band toured extensively around the world. In 2009 came the acclaimed follow up album I Speak Fula.
